Enhance your gaming experience with the latest CPU upgrades.
I’m looking to improve my gaming PC. It’s mostly for games, and I currently have an i5-7400 with a GTX 1080. The GPU often runs at low usage (40%-50%) while the CPU stays near 100% in most titles. I’m considering a used i7-6700K for under €90, thinking it might perform better than my current setup. However, I’m unsure if it will keep up with the GPU or support future upgrades. Could anyone confirm whether this upgrade would prevent the GPU from becoming a bottleneck? Thanks in advance for your help!
The 6700K is sufficient for most tasks, closely matching the 7700K performance. A minor overclock could boost gaming results. If it falls short, consider upgrading to a new motherboard and CPU, as the 7700K offers limited gains over the 6700K.
You can verify it by comparing the socket details on both the i5 and i7 models. If they match, it likely confirms a CPU swap.
It's just a CPU swap, but I want to mention that the 6700k is comparable to the R3-3300x. I strongly recommend changing platforms. Mostly because a 3300x is about $100, whereas a used 6700k or 7700k is at least $200 or more. Plus, you'd have room to upgrade later on the Ryzen 3000 series. If you invest $200 in an i7 from five years ago, you're essentially buying outdated technology. I sold my old 6700k for $200 in July, and it was worth less than expected anyway.
