Hey everyone, I've been using my 6700K for several years now—probably since August 2015. It's been around for a while, and things have definitely changed since then. I'm starting to feel it's time for an upgrade. I've been experimenting with Threadripper, but it might be a bit pricey for what I do. Mostly I play general games, edit with Premiere Pro and After Effects, but I've started getting into Blender and Unity now. I'm worried the AMD 3950X could give me better performance at a lower cost, though I'm unsure if I'll lose any features by switching from Intel. Any advice would be great! Thanks, Ally.
expect the delay—fourth generation should arrive soon, so switching to Ryzen won’t require any changes now.

Of course. There’s always potential ahead. You’re not coming from a dinosaur like an FX, and right now Ryzen isn’t clearly better than Intel. With Intel still stuck at 14nm, the Ryzen 4000 should probably outperform it in most areas instead of being a middle ground. A few quick questions if you’re considering upgrading: 1. Do you rely on rendering for your income? 2. Are you mainly looking to purchase something new? 3. Are you extremely dissatisfied with how your current system performs?
lol well, i try. 2 is reason enough imo. i've been there. i almost bought a 9900k to upgrade off my 8700k.....and almost bought a 3700x to upgrade my 1600......but uh......there was no reason other than "i can" so i didn't. but if i did, it woulda been totally cool too.

I’d suggest a jump from 1600 to 3700x represents a bigger change for gaming than what you’re considering. The first-gen Ryzen was only slightly less powerful than a fourth-gen Intel chip, and AMD didn’t catch up until the third generation. For someone using an i7 skylake, upgrading to a first or second Ryzen wouldn’t have improved gaming performance—it might even have made it worse. Only with a third-gen processor did you start seeing real benefits. The 9900k is essentially an 8700k with two extra cores. That’s the main difference. For most tasks, there’s no substantial gain. My take is that the Ryzen 3000 still lags behind in single-precision performance compared to Intel, even if benchmarks look similar. Most fans will dismiss this point or mention Intel’s advanced manufacturing process. Each technology has its pros and cons, so it’s unfair to overlook them. Your 6700k, with good overclocking, isn’t noticeably slower than today’s or 10th-gen Intel chips—it just has a lower maximum clock speed and fewer cores.
