Start by running the program to retrieve your key if you're unsure about your Windows 8 serial number. Next, use the command (slmgr.vbs -upk) to remove the key from your current system. After that, reinstall the product on your new PC as usual and attempt to apply the key again—if it doesn't work, follow the phone activation steps I previously mentioned.

I had Windows 8, not 8.1, on the laptop that came with Windows 8. I need to disable activation there and perform a fresh install from Win7Ultimate on another laptop to Windows 8 (which I intend to upgrade to 8.1). I used the Windows 8 installer from the Microsoft site when I encountered that error message.
