Encountering difficulties with the installation of a new M.2 NVMe drive using a PCIe adapter card
Hello everyone, a few months ago I purchased a new M.2 NVMe SSD (Lexar NM790, 2280-2TB) because my old drive was running out of space. Since my motherboard only has one M.2 port (B450 Tomahawk Max), I opted to use my PCIe slot with an adapter card. I used the Gembird m.2 adapter (PEX-M2-01). Everything seems configured, but I’m still having trouble getting the drive to appear. In the BIOS I don’t see the PCIe slot active, and it doesn’t show up as a recognized device. There are two LEDs on the card—one red and one blinking green. I’ve moved the SSDs around, and now the new drive is being detected normally in the integrated M.2 slot. I updated the BIOS recently. Do you have any suggestions or advice on how to resolve this? Thanks in advance! Also, note that I know my motherboard can’t handle the full speeds of this SSD, but I intended to upgrade later.
The old one also does not work. I am wondering if it might be because the adapter is x4 and the slot is x16. Though I assume that shouldn't be the issue. I wanted to try and have the adapter card set up in the main x16 slot usually occupied by the graphics card, but then I have no visual to get into the BIOS. it's the MSI B450 Tomahawk Max This is the adapter I am using https://gembird.com/item.aspx?id=9953&lang=en
It's straightforward, no complicated steps needed. The second PCIe x16 port is set for x4 bandwidth, which should work fine. It operates at PCIe 2.0 speed, so keep that in mind later, but it shouldn't impact the drive's performance. This applies unless you're referring to the main PCIe lane (likely used by a GPU).
Accept all the suggestions, but it doesn’t seem to be resolving anything. It’s unclear what next step to take. Maybe I’ll try a different adapter and check later.
It appears the item is faulty. I also received a matching card, but it contains no functional parts—it’s just a pin adapter.
