Encountered a freeze while gaming despite testing all possible fixes. No clear resolution found.
Hello everyone, I’m seeking assistance after months of persistent troubleshooting. My computer is frequently freezing unexpectedly, especially while gaming, and sometimes during lighter tasks. The screen freezes completely, locking the display, and the system stops responding, forcing a hard shutdown through the case button.
Hardware details:
- Case: NZXT H9 Elite (2023)
- GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 4080 Gaming X Trio (2023)
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X (2022)
- Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix X570-F Gaming (ATX, 2020)
- RAM: 64GB (4×16GB) G.Skill Trident Z Neo RGB DDR4-3600MHz (2022)
- PSU: Corsair RM1000X 80+ Gold, fully modular (2023, OEM cables)
- Cable: Premium Individually Sleeved 12+4pin PCIe Gen 5 12V-2x6 600W, Type 4, BLACK
- Monitor setup: Originally 3, now testing with just 1
Symptoms: Complete freeze during gaming, occasional during lighter work. No BSOD, no automatic restart, no logs—just a total lockout.
I’ve tried various fixes online:
- Swapped RAM configurations (2 sticks, 1 stick, different slots)
- Reseated GPU multiple times, removed the support bracket
- Replaced and reconnected all PSU cables (OEM Corsair, new 12VHPWR)
- Removed case side panels to check airflow
- Cut down monitors to one
- Disconnected extra USB devices
- Updated BIOS and reset to defaults
- Installed NVIDIA drivers
- Tested different NZXT CAM cooling modes (Silent, Normal, Performance)
- Checked PSU multirail mode (RM1000X only single-rail)
- Ran MemTest86 on all RAM (passed)
- Used thermal gun for temperature check:
- Cable temps: ~50–55°C under load
- VRMs: ~50–60°C
- Board temps: ~70–75°C
- CPU/GPU: ~70–75°C
Results so far:
- No thermal issues detected despite high loads.
- Cooling appears adequate, though case panels were moved for comparison.
- Stress tests (FurMark, 3DMark, OCCT) passed without problems.
- PSU multirail mode tested but didn’t affect stability.
What I’ve noticed: Removing the case back panel and using the Performance cooling profile in NZXT CAM helped prevent freezes during gaming. The temperatures stayed within normal ranges. It seems the problem might be related to airflow or heat dissipation, possibly due to the case design or internal thermal behavior. I’m not sure what else to try, but it’s giving me some hope.
Let me know if you have any ideas or steps I should skip!
I noticed my highest case fans set as intake, sending warm air toward the VRMs through the radiator. I switched them to exhaust fans, but haven’t tested thoroughly yet. I’ll share updates on how this change affects the problem.
Top case fans (with AIO radiator) were set as intake, pushing hot air back into the case near the CPU socket and VRMs. This led to heat buildup, especially with side panels on, even though all temperatures stayed within normal limits. It triggered freezes during heavy tasks like OCCT AVX2 or gaming. I changed them to exhaust fans instead. Kept the rest of the fan layout unchanged (normal intake from bottom/front). Used a standard fan curve, not maxed. Ran an OCCT AVX2 power test for over six hours – no freezes. CPU and RAM temperatures dropped about 6°C. The system is now stable under load with panels in place. I’m surprised I didn’t catch this sooner but I’ve learned...
