After about half an hour on my upgraded system, the machine suddenly freezes and begins generating numerous error messages. Need help! Intel Athlon 64 X2 5000 500GB HDD, 8GB DDR2 RAM, ATI Radeon X1300.

1) Which distribution is this?
2) Was it functional before the upgrade?
3) Did you simply copy the drive or start from zero?
It seems like a damaged disk. Assuming the hard drive is intact (which should be the case if it's new), the issue might be with the installation or clone process—consider reinstalling the OS.

It's Ubuntu 18.04 lts, directly from the official site. Prior to the upgrade, an old HDD running Vista was operational, though the drive has since failed. I set up from scratch, using a bootable Rufus image (I needed dd because the ISO didn't work).

Verify the integrity of your downloaded file with a checksum. Consider re-flashing the boot media as well.

I prefer using Etcher.io instead of Rufus or Unetbootin for Linux live USB setup. I’ve also found success with YUMI.
