The system prompts you to restart and choose the correct boot source or insert a boot disk in the selected device, then press a key. I had to turn it off before proceeding.

Adjust boot sequence in BIOS settings or press "Esc" or another set hardware key once during installation to manually switch the boot device for this one time.

the system operates on a single hard drive with no external storage device available tonight. after launching the startup menu and completing updates, it restarts and displays this message upon rebooting.

I often misinterpret information. The Windows setup process is unclear to me. Could you clarify how you got it installed? Having the installation media would help with fixing the system.

Adjust the BIOS settings to use legacy and UEFI (also known as CSM - compatibility support module). It’s possible you have Windows installed in legacy mode while the BIOS runs in UEFI. Occasionally a BIOS upgrade can be applied through Windows Update (this happens sometimes on my HP laptop if needed). In our workplace, all devices are configured for legacy due to an unclear reason, and we revert to legacy during updates—perhaps annually. Another approach is to switch to legacy and UEFI, then when the system starts, press the boot menu key to check if your drive or Windows boot manager appears.

Consider a complete reinstall. It might resemble a BIOS setup or a file on your CD drive.
