You'll have to buy a new license again if I recall right. OEM licenses don't transfer unless the OEM handles it in specific cases (like warranty repairs). Retail licenses can be deactivated and used elsewhere. That logic follows otherwise—otherwise I'd be joking with Best Buy by buying a PC, grabbing the key, and swapping it.

I just contacted Windows Support and described the situation. I provided my W8.1 key and they issued me a Windows 10 key.

if your MB failed or you needed to replace it, faulty or not, they usually give you a new key or let your old one work again. I’ve done this many times, even upgraded my x79 system to an x99 board because the tech got overwhelmed by all the info. It also helps to call before their support team closes for the night—they often respond quickly then. Always de-authenticate a PC MB if you’re planning upgrades or changes; unless it fails, just call them and don’t hesitate.
