I purchased a Dell PC in February this year, and Windows is notifying me on May 5 that my license expires. I’m using Windows 8, so should I switch to 8.1 Specs Dell Xps 8700 i7 4770 12GB RAM 1TB HDD GT-G635?

No, I didn't need to use the key. You handled that yourself.

Hello, here are some steps you can take. First, press the activate button and observe the results—don’t stress if it prompts you to call a number; it’s just an activation wizard, something I’ve used many times. You might want to install a program that can detect your Windows key, which would be helpful. Next, reach out to Microsoft support for a live chat; they’ll likely request your product key and provide more details. I recommend going through these options before upgrading to Windows 8.1, since you don’t actually have an 8.1 key, which is why I’m starting with Windows 8 first. Best of luck!

Proceed with upgrading to version 8.1, attempt activation, and consider contacting Microsoft if needed.

Reach out to Dell for help. The purchase should have placed it on the 8.1 operating system.

Where did you purchase the computer? If it wasn't bought from a retail store and you got it used or from eBay, things went wrong. I've never faced problems with Microsoft support when using an upgrade key on a new machine. If your device is genuine, contact Microsoft—they'll resolve it promptly.
