I've also been thinking about this. Mostly rely on MPC-HC64, but occasionally switch to VLC for certain tasks.
I haven't tried any particular skins. I stick to the default since, usually, I only check the VLC interface briefly before switching to fullscreen. That's a fair estimate—I rarely use it now, but I need it because certain video formats are the only ones that usually work. VLC – for those times when you're wondering why anyone still uses .drc in 2023?
I want 100% of it dark all windows all menus. It is dark theme, not a skin.

I'm not sure how to do that. I used to have Mate, and the settings were similar, but I didn't install anything then. The link you shared is for Qt-based systems only.
