Avoid or consider ignoring? A family member got a torrent after I warned them, which triggered an ISP email from Spectrum/Charter Communications. How can we stop this from happening again without stress? I’m upset they knew exactly what was downloaded. Would a VPN user receive such a notice if only high bandwidth was visible? Thanks!

Completely disregard this. A comment implies prior awareness. They use various methods to monitor these downloads. The file may be monitored, they can observe the download process to your IP address and proceed accordingly.

They’d mostly notice increased internet speed when connecting to or from your VPN service.

Using a VPN with DNS leak protection hides their activity. Rely on your VPN service and its server positions, but be cautious about unknown sources. If unsure, disable P2P traffic on your network.

It's happened to me before a lot of times, nothing major. Don't worry about it, partner.

It sounds confusing—those copyright enforcement rules do exist in the United States. The website you mentioned discusses legal issues around using content online. Laws vary by country, but the U.S. does have regulations to protect intellectual property.

We had an issue with a roommate a while ago, which caused our internet speed to drop to 1mbit/s. We switched the WiFi passwords and turned off their Ethernet port. The problem was fixed.

I don’t have personal experiences, but here are some points to consider. You might want to look into paid options for better privacy and performance. Most free services limit download speeds and track usage. Setting it up on your modem/router can help manage traffic, but you’ll need to check their terms. Knowing detailed information about downloads or IP addresses raises concerns—stick to reputable providers if you’re worried about security.

If proof exists—such as someone accessing honeypots—you may face penalties in the United States.
