Elite Dangerous: Horizons offers a vast interstellar experience, while Star Citizen provides a more community-driven, open-world setting. Consider what kind of gameplay you enjoy—wide exploration for Horizon or collaborative missions for Star Citizen—and choose accordingly. Your preferences will guide the best pick!

I bought ED when the thanksgiving sale was up, and for $17 it was fucking amazing. I've kinda gotten a little out of it, but once you get over the learning curve it's an amazing game. Except now I'm a little bummed that they want another $80 for Horizons.

You seem interested in a game that's either new or not coming soon, and I don’t believe Star Citizen will be released any time soon.

Citizen won't be available for a while, but now that I have control over it, I'll get it ready to use with my friends and because of the graphics.

Elite Dangerous receives new updates with the addition of planetary landing in the latest season, along with other enhancements. Future improvements will include multi-crew support and pilot customization. Star Citizen seems less promising at the moment due to its instability and lack of substance; it appears more like a polished tech showcase, so patience is advised.

I believe the problem lies in the marketing approach. Frontier markets Horizons as an expansion, but customers interpret it as DLC. DLCs typically cost under $20 for most titles. Keep in mind, Horizon was being developed since December last year, meaning we’re investing in a full year of development and testing. It’s not a low-cost EA DLC that just adds one map. Frontier intends to release new seasons or expansions annually for the next decade. Be prepared to commit to the full price if you want the newest version each year. Unless you opt for the Seasons Pass around $180, which gives access to everything in the future—including beta versions. You actually receive a discount on Horizons if you own the base game. In reality, if you purchased ED at $15 on Black Friday and now want Horizon while still having Season 1 access, you get $15 off Horizons. So they seem to refund your base game you’ve been playing for weeks and then hand you Horizon. From my perspective: rather than charging a recurring monthly fee (due to the expensive ED infrastructure running on AWS), they’re opting for an annual charge. But if you don’t want Horizon, you can continue playing Season 1 on live servers, which will still be upcoming features for Season 1 owners—like new loot and crafting systems. Unlike games with monthly fees, stopping payments means losing access; once the servers shut down in ten years, you won’t be able to play Season 1 anymore.
