I've checked the Windows 8 folder and system32, but no suitable file was found. The startscreen folder exists, yet it doesn't contain any executable that would launch the UI. It seems the issue might be elsewhere or hidden in a different location.

It seems unlikely for someone without special access to notice the details. The reason might be unclear, but it’s not something you’d typically encounter in everyday use.

Set up Windows 7...and it’s a total mess! I was under the impression it was part of the operating system and couldn’t be taken away.

Only certain adjustments can be made via metro apps. Removing the device would severely impact your PC. Unless you require a few hundred megabytes, I don’t think this is essential.

Click the right button on the task bar, select Properties Navigation Check. When logging in, go to Start and ensure the desktop background is displayed on start. Make sure all other navigation options are unchecked.

The start menu is integrated into Windows' foundation, yet you can eliminate the current UI applications if preferred.
