Hi, I'm experiencing a problem with my used Sapphire Pulse RX 6800 XT. I bought it on eBay from a well-known seller at a good price and requested a full refund. The fans on the card start making a high-pitched whine or whirring noise around 1200 RPM. I understand this isn't related to GPU load coil whine, as I can trigger the sound by adjusting fan speed in AMD Adrenaline when not under load. I found a video showing the noise—starting fans at 1200 RPM, turning them off, then back on: https://imgur.com/a/AH28Nqj. Although the sound isn’t very loud in the clip, it’s quite noticeable and distracting. I’ve read that it might disappear if the fans vibrate at that speed for extended periods, but I’m unsure how long that would take. I’m considering returning the card for a full refund, but since I paid a reasonable price, finding another card quickly would be tough. The cooling performance and gaming experience have been excellent. Are there any other steps I can take to silence this noise before deciding on a return? I’d rather keep my GPU until I find a better deal.
That's quite a loud noise for fans, never experienced that before except on my budget AIO. Those fans weren't functioning well. When you turn them on midway through the video, it sounds like a fan is loose or something is touching it. That's quite a rattling sound when spinning up. Could the seller send you a replacement card instead of a refund? The card has three fans—can you stop one with your finger to identify which is causing the noise? It doesn't hurt too much. Avoid keeping the fan still for too long.
It seems they don’t have any other cards at the same price left, but I’ll check further! I attempted to turn off the rear fans to identify the issue, and it looks like those two fans are the culprits. I’m in agreement with that thought. I used to own an EVGA GTX 970 and it was almost inaudible!
I just talked to the seller. It said used, but it was described as excellent condition, stress tested, fully working, and clean. Upon arrival, it seemed brand new.
A very late reply, but I thought you might enjoy an update after all your help. (especially from a fellow auto enthusiast) The seller did accept the card back and refunded me. I then bought a used RTX 3080 from a different, even *better* reviewed used PC part seller on ebay. It was "fully refurbished backed with a one year warranty". When that one arrived, as soon as I started my PC and the fans spun up, it sounded like a broken diesel generator. It was SO loud and rear fan was clearly broken, I doubt those pricks even plugged the card in, let alone refurbished it. They also accepted my return request and I sent that back in too. After all that I picked up an open box Sapphire RX 7800 XT with a $52 discount from Microcenter, which has been fantastic. Super quiet and powerful. Third times the charm I guess haha.
It's a bit late, but Sapphire ensured the fans on the Pulse and NITRO+ cards are serviceable and replaceable. You can detach the fans from the cooler using a single screw, and purchase a replacement. Hopefully, eBay buyers will thoroughly test the cards, though this can happen with used resellers. It's good to finally have it work with the Sapphire 7800 XT.
