my mom's netbook is outdated because it has too many unnecessary programs and it slows down when using the internet. it only stays open for a few minutes while browsing, which shows how bad the performance is. i’m not sure if reinstalling windows would help since it was already slow at first. maybe switching to a simpler operating system would be better. a lightweight distro could work well enough, especially since she mainly uses online banking, emails, and cloud services. it might be easier for her to manage without complicated steps.

Because you have limited memory, consider a distro that uses Openbox or a simple window manager. Most Like Windows: Zorin OS Lightweight Yet Fully Featured: Crunchbang Running on just 1GB of RAM and a single-core processor will be very challenging.

I’d add 2GB of RAM and reinstall Windows. Yes, Cloud Office functions on Linux too. However, learning Linux for your mom will be tough because some features don’t work properly or require different approaches. Both Lubuntu and Mint should run smoothly.

I chose Ubuntu to restore my netbook (primary device) using a Celeron M processor running at 1.2GHz.

Choose Puppy Linux for beginners or Arch for advanced users.

I meant practical rather than quick verification. Finding another 1GB DDR2 stick for laptops would be quite challenging, especially since it’s still a few years old. I’d rather choose something with ongoing support.

I used a netbook with identical specifications, but the biggest improvement came from adding 2GB of RAM. Even after installing an SSD, the CPU performance was still quite slow, making it hard to get much speed from the storage upgrade. I tested several operating systems—Ubuntu Netbook Edition, Fedora, Arch Linux—and all experienced CPU-related delays due to their single-core configuration with only two threads.

Locating DDR2 RAM can be challenging because many retailers only offer it at low prices, and online shops are common alternatives. It usually works well with a slightly modified Windows 7 setup.
