Hey there! I just switched my ISP from Spectrum 100MB to Metronet 500MB. I’m using a Linksys EA7300 and thought it was time to upgrade my router. I’m looking for some advice on what to consider. My home is three levels up with about 1725 sq.ft. The ONT and router are in a closet on the third floor, with standard drywall inside. All the walls are drywall, and most devices are close to the router except one Roku on the first floor. I’m thinking of three routers: the Nighthawk R7000P for $75 (secondhand, still factory-warranty), a second option from Amazon that’s a bit more expensive but works well, and the TP-Link Archer AC1750 Smart Router which caught my eye despite its 2.4GHz speed being a bit lower than expected. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Given the size of the house, you don’t need to stress about the router’s wireless features. Look for a device that covers all your requirements and install PoE injectors on access points. Used Cisco gear is often available inexpensively on eBay.

other requirements could be handled simply with a basic switch connected to the ONT. wifi coverage matters mainly because the roku on the first floor is used often. we and my wife usually encounter dead zones when moving to the second or third floors. a PoE adaptor wouldn’t help much since we only have two wired devices. we also need around 15+ connected devices, so ensuring strong signals and reducing gaps is important.

They claim a coverage area of 2500 square feet and compatibility with over 50 devices, though I should be cautious about those numbers.

It appears to be an ONT or ONT/Router setup, though the details suggest individual APs perform better.
