ECC RAM paired with B450M Pro4 and Ryzen 1600 processor
I aim to set up a FreeNAS system using a Ryzen processor, though most recommend ECC support. I received the following configuration: mainboard - Asrock B450M Pro4 (listed as ECC-compatible with Ryzen) - Ryzen 1600 (source confirms DDR4-2666 ECC memory) - Kingston KTD-PE426S8/8G (specs match) The issue is that it fails to boot, displaying a black screen after about 15 seconds. I switched to a 16GB Kingston HX430C15PB3K2/32 stick and it works fine. After some investigation, it seems the MOBO and CPU only support unbuffered ECC, and I purchased a registered model instead of the KT H-PP 426E/8G which advertises unbuffered ECC. My plan is to return the RAM I bought. If I switch to the KTD-PE426S8/8G, will that resolve the problem? Are there any other factors I should consider?
You can access any unregistered memory without buffering, which means it works the same for gaming or ECC memory. Registered ECC only fixes one bit of errors. It’s hard to say if you have enough installed memory to worry about single-bit changes. For ECC correction that requires registration, you need workstation or server hardware.
