Hi, I'm working on assembling a new gaming PC featuring R9 290 graphics in CrossFire and an X5650 processor. With the budget running low and RAM costs high, I'm considering using some affordable ECC memory with my Xeon. I've heard mixed things about using ECC on the MSI X58 Pro-E—some say it works because the CPU handles it, while others report issues. I've found cheap ECC RAM options, like 16GB (four 4GB sticks) priced around 28 euros. Would anyone have experience with ECC memory on this model?

ECC memory may sometimes fail or behave unpredictably in Xeons and standard consumer devices.

The motherboard details remain unclear, which is expected. I located a forum discussion where someone attempted ECC RAM on this board without success: https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/x58...m.2483375/

I’ve been checking around and discovered some alternative motherboards. I found affordable 8GB consumer kits and also looked into unbuffered memory options, though they came at a similar price to the consumer ones. I believe that will be my decision. Thanks for your help!

I also discovered a potentially superior motherboard: the Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R is still undecided on price, yet the MSI Pro-E previously cost 65 euros—what’s truly affordable for an X58 board?

I’d be happy to trade you my old 12GB DDR3 kit from my X58 system, though you’re in Europe—got it!

That's a great deal, but the distance is something I sometimes wish I had. I often dream of living in America or Canada because the prices here for new hardware are crazy—most parts are $50 more expensive. Some stores even sell a GTX 1080 for €1,136 with free shipping, but I've seen listings go as high as 100,000 and then it feels overpriced. My old 8GB kit cost $30, but now the same one costs $70. Used server gear is surprisingly affordable.

MSI X58 pro - e, X5690 with one 64 Gb ECC RAM strip didn't function. If smaller slots show up, I'll review them.
