It seems Google Earth has automatically set itself up, as it wasn’t installed by anyone else and no permission was given. The icon now appears on your desktop. Is Google that intrusive? What steps can be taken to stop it from doing things like this?

Have you recently added any additional software or modified an existing application or utility? It might have come from a pre-chosen "install" option that was concealed or not easily visible. The standard choice was to install Google Earth.

It's unlikely it was installed on its own. It probably arrived as part of another program, as mentioned earlier.
