Considered a solid budget system with the Xeon e5 2689. Reviewed many benchmarks and found it performs similarly to a Ryzen 7 1700. Got some opinions on whether to proceed or explore another option around $50 more.

Which board are you considering? Suitable options for the initial stage can be difficult to locate. Used models tend to be affordable, while inexpensive Chinese versions often come with unexpected problems.

It would be smarter to choose an x99 based setup over an x79 one. X79 cards are getting harder to locate each day, and DDR3 prices are rising steadily. You might pay roughly $50 more for a 2011-3 xeon, but you'd still benefit from the extra RAM, faster board, and better performance per clock. An e5 2667 v3 could be purchased for about $50 more, offering 12 cores versus 8, identical clock speeds, higher IPC, plus cheaper components and a newer platform.

Checked the price and saw it's $150 instead of $35. Also spotted a RAM deal—16GB at 30$, 1600MHz. I’ll stick to under $100 for the board.

I located a 2667 v3 for $80, which seemed reasonable. Even if it weren't perfect, you wouldn't have to worry about the price difference. If I were making the choice, I'd opt for the higher-end version.

Aim for a solid motherboard. A used one is usually safer than a refurbished Chinese one, which can have unexpected problems. Check that the board appears well-maintained and consider one designed for overclocking, since those are typically higher quality and supported better.
