Hello everyone, thank you for taking the time to read this. I’ve been facing an unusual issue lately. It began when the power went out. I’m not sure if anything changed before or after the modem reconnected after the outage—maybe something got damaged during the blackout.
Right now, my speed is synced at 37800, which was around 34mbit before the power cut. After testing with just my computer connected via wired internet (the same speed appears on Wi-Fi too), the test starts at the expected rate but drops below 29mbit after about three seconds. I think if the test didn’t finish, it might have gone even lower.
I spoke to my ISP, who said there’s no fault detected and no line limit has been set. I’ve tried a different modem that supports up to 42mbit, but the speed still drops below 29mbit.
I’m wondering if a power surge or disruption could have damaged a Cat6 outdoor cable connecting the indoor outlet to the outside unit. If anyone has faced something similar and found a solution, please share your thoughts!
Power spikes or outages can still harm networking gear, even with surge protectors. I’d consider replacing the cables and connecting directly to the modem instead of using the wall jack.
Hey, thanks for your quick reply. I'm currently using a Cat6a Ethernet cable directly connected to the modem/router from my ISP. It seems the connection works fine when testing via Wi-Fi on my phone—signal quality matches what I expect. The speed appears correct initially, but it drops after a short period. I suspect this might be due to the outdoor Cat6 cable or the wall socket. If there were issues with either of those, should the sync speed drop as well?
I conducted various checks to verify this. Multiple servers worked with both wired and Wi-Fi connections. I’m concentrating on a pattern that gradually decreases. At first, the speed increases and hits about 34.2mbits, but after 4-5 seconds it starts dropping steadily. My initial idea was that a cap exists around 25-30mbit, yet the ISP confirmed no such limit is in place. This behavior persists even when I connect at lower speeds (35000) or higher ones (42000), and the speed keeps falling regardless of the modem type. Hardwired or not.
Also, let me tell you I’m aware in other regions the internet wiring setup might vary from what I experience. I think you have a test socket behind the wall socket. This situation doesn’t match mine—it’s just the outdoor wire going through the wall and connecting past the wall socket. The socket type is likely a slave or secondary socket, which is the first one the wire enters the house. No other sockets are connected to it, and there are no phones or filters attached, since I’m using a naked DSL connection.
