The top DualShock 4 PC tool you're considering is likely the DS4 Tool. It’s praised for being convenient and doesn’t require constant reconnection.

Until Windows provides built-in compatibility for the DS4, you'll need to use additional programs so your DS4 is acknowledged. Avoid running a program each time you connect the controller; consider purchasing an xb1/360 controller.

I've mainly used ds4tool and its electrobrains windows version, which feels more reliable. Even when minimized, alt+tab still works without disappearing instantly—you just need to restart it. It looks like you don't have to close Steam or similar apps for ds4windows to hide the wireless controller device. Not much guidance here, but I'm familiar with only a few inhexsters branches of ds4tool. It handles what I need, so I didn’t search further. The problem is that DS4 is a direct input controller, not xinput.

bs. The DS4 already works natively with Windows. The "problem" is that it is a direct input device and that most games just support Xinput. IIRC DS4 tool has an option that allows you to run it automatically on startup. You can also run it minimized so you don't even have to worry about it.
