Attempt it directly. It could confirm the files and start functioning. Similar to how GTA V updates are copied

The Witcher 3 avoids DRM when available in your GOG collection. Therefore, copying it to a separate external drive should work smoothly.

You can still create a backup and restore it on another PC or even another Steam account using steam. My friend and I do this occasionally to avoid downloading the same game multiple times due to data limits. I find it odd that some people advise against copying GOG games.

You have options beyond just a folder with game files. You can also copy installers, such as those for Witcher 3 which are already DRM-free. You can distribute installers like any purchased game using GOG’s license, which doesn’t require additional keycodes after installation. To access the installer on your GOG account, you’ll need it initially, but once downloaded, it won’t ask for further keys. For Steam and Origin titles, you can move the folder to another PC and inform Steam/Origin where to locate it. The account must own the game for play. Settings and savefiles will be fetched if the game supports cloud services. Alternatively, you can handle this manually and decide whether to use local or server files.
