Drives via Front Port aren't functioning properly
Hi everyone, I recently assembled a new gaming PC and handled the setup, including removing pins from the motherboard for the front USB header (FU3A_5G). Disappointing 😅. Not wanting to replace the motherboard, I opted for a PCIe card with two 19-pin connectors. It functioned briefly before stopping to recognize any USB drives in the front ports. Restarting didn’t help. The card is connected to the PCIEX2 slot because X4 is blocked by an M.2 SSD. Setup details: Motherboard model, CPU, RAM, GPU, case, storage configuration, and OS version. Anyone know why this isn’t working or if there are alternative ports I should try? Perhaps the PCIe card isn’t suitable. Thanks in advance.
I disassembled the pins during the connection attempt with the front panel connector. The issue might also involve the connector itself. Besides, it appears to be a standard USB PCIe card with two headers, which is unusual for a typical PCIe x1 link. If this device is power-hungry or has too many ports, it could struggle to supply sufficient power. It might also be damaged overall—it seems like a generic, possibly counterfeit product from an unknown seller on Amazon.
I checked their Amazon shop—it seems to be full of cheap, imitation products that might not be very good quality. @Cervidae There are many superior brands on Amazon instead.
I connected the 19pin cable from the case and then powered on the GPU, hitting the cable with the GPU. It came out at a very awkward angle. I assumed everything would be okay and reinserted the cable, pushing the pins downwards. Perhaps you're right—there might still be some pin in the male section of the cable. But even if that's the case, why did it work initially and then stop? I bought the cheapest option thinking it was just a PCIe to USB adapter. A lesson learned. It seems I need to either get another PCIe card or a new front USB component.
