My friend had some trouble configuring the settings, and the Wi-Fi icon didn't appear. I looked in Device Manager, but it was gone. When I checked it, an error appeared. I tried updating, restarting, and even reinstalling, but no external adapter worked. What should I do next?

Identify the exact hardware, then connect it via USB on another device. Access the download page using the USB key and retrieve the appropriate driver. Return to your PC and install the driver.
