Downloading Windows 10 files now.
It’s likely the issue stems from the way the storage was set up. Formatting would erase all data, including temporary files needed for Windows 10. Moving your page file to the D: partition and turning off system restore can free up significant space on the C: drive. These steps usually help regain 10–30GB of capacity.
I plan to relocate the page file to a different drive and turn off system restore to observe the outcome. Appreciate the advice. I previously formatted the drive and reinstalled Windows 8.1 because I thought that version suited me better. The gwx.exe appeared earlier, indicating the update was downloading quietly in the background. There was about 2GB of space left on my SSD, which isn’t much but still ample. After this update notification, there was now 20MB available, confirming the files had been downloaded. If anyone else has suggestions or insights to share, I’d be very grateful.
Delete the folder since Microsoft is pushing Windows 10 as a mandatory update next year, urging users to move away from Windows 7 and 8.1 entirely. Adjusting the Windows update settings in the control panel offers more control over the process, though you might still prevent the download of the Windows 10 upgrade.
Use SpaceSniffer (free) to see which files use the most space and remove them easily within the app.
I located several large files around 12GB. After searching, I discovered they relate to sleeping functions. Since my computer doesn’t actually sleep, I didn’t need them stored on the drive. I found ways to remove them easily.
