Hey everyone, we have two MacBook Airs, a Chromebit and an old Windows XP desktop. About five years ago we transferred all non-transferable files from the XP machines onto one MacBook. We keep multiple backups on USB drives and external hard drives, but now our only Windows PC is dead, so we can't reach the Windows-only data on any other office computers. I’m wondering if it’s possible to legally download a Windows XP Professional 64-bit ISO and install it on a MacBook partition. Using the license key from the old desktop would let us access the necessary files. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Matthew.

No official XP updates are available now, so you’ll need to locate a safe source and ensure you have the proper license to avoid any legal issues.

There isn’t an official release from Microsoft at all. The sole download available for Windows XP is Windows XP Mode for Windows 7, which won’t fully resolve the issue. Downloading elsewhere with a valid key isn’t illegal. You should search for a reputable site that appears safe for downloading.

The issue likely stems from compatibility between your system and the data format. The data might be stored in a database that requires specific software, such as Windows XP, to function properly. If you can access NTFS/FAT on macOS and Linux, it suggests the files are not native to those environments, possibly due to outdated or unsupported tools.

http://91.121.154.109/Windows Xp/ I've verified a couple of this site's Win7 .iso files, and the checksums match those provided by Technet. Also heard people say that Microsoft support will verify this IP adress as being one of theirs, but never checked that myself. The second link on that page should be what you need, but you may have to download the service packs manually because this is a pre-SP1 .iso Here's a link to Service pack 2. My Google-fu is letting me down with regards to SP1 tho, it looks like they pulled it from their download section. There never was an SP3 for 64bit XP because Microsoft by then had abandoned that platform to focus on Vista x64.

It seems like you're reflecting on something intriguing. Your mother's Windows XP shut down on its own, and we managed to remove all the data, which isn't a major issue.
