Hello, I'm working on setting up a Windows 7 system for some older games that aren't widely supported on newer versions like Windows 10 or 11 from GOG. While I have an activation key, finding a reliable download source is tricky. Are there any trusted websites where I can get the actual install files? This setup will be dedicated to legacy titles that don’t run well in compatibility mode.

About a third of the way through the page is the method to obtain it directly from Microsoft. As long as your activation code is valid, you should be able to download the ISO.

Microsoft no longer provides Windows 7 ISO images. The 8.x series is also likely ending its support soon, similar to 7. Without ongoing maintenance, it may be time to seek alternatives. I maintain a collection of ISOs on my NAS for reference moving forward.

Sorry for that... I didn’t visit the MS download section because my license isn’t OEM, which wouldn’t grant access. There are many places where it’s available, but Windows 7 is risky to tamper with. The safest path is searching online for unopened OEM DVDs used by smaller PC builders. That’s how I obtained my Windows 7 Ultimate years back. I then assembled my own system and registered it with the first build, moving it to a third build—now an AMD 5900X. I just marked the box indicating hardware changes and confirmed the license transfer worked. These physical disks are affordable, and since they’re official from Microsoft, there’s no chance of hacks or malware. Even though support for security updates has ended, downloading it after installation should be fine.

If you have time, I can remove my copy of the installation CD if you truly need it.
