I'm getting more XP to play with once I receive the parts. Make sure to install XP Service Pack 2 XP Pro.

You might want to try Internet Explorer version 8 first.

I installed it on a Vostro 220 board with an E8500 processor, 4 gigabytes of RAM, and a 750TI memory module. It works perfectly fine.

I'm uploading pictures now. Security Essentials isn't updating at all. Drivers and other updates are fine. I ran into issues with a chipset driver—had to use Chrome to reach Dell for the software. It was an Intel-related COM port thing, not the most critical. All drivers are resolved. Just need to install the case.

You placed it in the case you purchased from New Egg for twenty dollars. When you power it on, you see an error message about a front USB cable. It suggests pressing F1 to continue or F2 to run setup, but you can't resolve the issue. The motherboard is 220.

The process was challenging. The CPU cooler interfered, so I had to adjust the hard drive bay tabs and reinstall the card reader. Space was limited, and the hard drive sat high above the RAM. This was the most difficult two hours of my time with a 3 1/2 inch drive in that situation. A smaller 2 1/2 inch drive would have been better. The front I/O was positioned at the bottom of the case, making things complicated. The 24-pin connector was under the hard drive bay, which was frustrating to connect. The case was very tight. I’m relieved I didn’t have a lot of components. Plugging in the USB ports and card reader was difficult. The SATA cable barely fit due to the 24 pin obstruction. The PCI sound card was removed because it blocked the GPU intake—just enough for the graphics card. I removed the front 120 mm fan, but the case made it ineffective. I also swapped out the 80 mm rear fan for a 90 mm one I had on hand. A fan speed reducer is needed for the CPU fan; it’s noisy but functional. It seems the E8500 won’t overheat much with XP.

Specs: Windows XP SP3, E8500 Intel CPU (3.16 GHz Duel Core), 4 GB DDR 2.8 GHz RAM (adequate), 750 Ti GPU MSI, single fan. (100 with shipping) Dell Vostro motherboard G45M03 E9839 SCM215 (27.79 W with shipping), new PSU VS 500 (50 W with shipping), CPU cooler (15 W with shipping), card reader (used), 1TB WD Green (used from years ago). It runs XP smoothly, though there’s a slight startup delay due to the hard drive.

Recommendations: Use the alignment tool from Western Digital for Windows XP if you don’t have a jumper nearby. After setup, switch to Serial IDE instead of AHCI before installation. If XP isn’t installed, a Blue Screen can occur—adjust BIOS settings under Advanced options if needed.

Some aspects don’t work perfectly. On the game Swarm I had to lower XP’s resolution to 800x600. After that it started. Then I increased it in the game to 1280x1024. Once I raised it back to 1980x1080 the game worked well. With Atari’s Arcade collection I had to lower XP’s resolution to 800x600 and play at that size. I’ll need to do this each time to get it running. These are Windows 95/98 titles. They function in XP. The color scheme doesn’t match on an AMD machine when Swarm runs Windows 10. It works fine on Windows 10 64-bit with the same hardware I just installed. However, on a machine with an HD 6870 GPU and Windows 10 using FX8350, 16 GB RAM and R290X GPU, the background turns orange instead of black. My guess is the AMD CPU isn’t matching the game for some reason. The Atari collection runs smoothly in XP. I haven’t tried Advent Rising in Windows 10—I think it’s only for XP. Other titles may not play movies or at all in Windows 10.
