Rank numbers are determined individually for each channel. You may achieve up to four positions per channel, though this varies based on the platform you're using.

Two ranks per channel is recommended. Four dual rank sticks per channel would equate to quad rank, slightly reducing the highest stable speed. Do not use quad rank on Ryzen if you aim for 3600MTs or more.
