I haven't played any PC shooters since the first Crysis came out in 2007, COD 2, and my favorite old-school Enemy Territory Quake Wars. I'm getting a bit old now because online multiplayer is moving so fast I barely notice what's happening. Are today's multiplayer games this quick? I know my setup isn't the issue—my rig has a 6700K GTX1080 and all. I was thinking about switching to Battlefield 1.

You probably don't recall those classic shooter titles. Modern FPS games feel sluggish. Return to Quake or the original Doom for a better experience. Multiplayer can be particularly challenging. Give the impressive single-player campaign in Doom a try.

Battlefield titles typically have expansive maps, which can slow things down, though some modes or games offer a quicker experience. Doom stands out for its rapid gameplay.

It's interesting that multiplayer in the new DOOM is seen as sluggish by many longtime fans. First-person shooters like BF1 offer a smoother experience, while DOOM has a lot happening but can feel rushed at first. You might find yourself struggling even more than you do now.

For reference, I believe it's just getting older. After skipping FPS games for a decade, I thought they were incredibly fast. When I revisited Rise of the Triad, my expectations were blown away. (That's the most rapid modern FPS I've imagined.) Improvement is possible. Singleplayer offers more flexibility—give it a shot. The DOOM singleplayer campaign is excellent, with solid progression. By the finish line, I felt like I'd significantly enhanced my FPS skills, landing headshots while airborne and maneuvering. Something I wouldn't have considered at the start. Challenge yourself even harder.

Probably I'm just not as familiar with this as before.

There are various kinds of FPS games. One involves sneaking behind objects and emerging to attack, like in the new Wolfenstein, while another features fast-paced action with constant movement, shooting, and using platforms—super intense. (This sentence was written on purpose for a reason.) You chose a tough game just to try it again.
