Doom is running like garbage
I recently installed Doom 2016 on my Dell G7. Now I run games that are more visually demanding than Doom. Yet, my graphics performance seems to drop unexpectedly. I have 8GB of DDR4 RAM, and I'm loading the game from a separate SSD—specifically a Samsung 850 EVO. My system runs an i7-8750h with an undervolt setting of -0.140. The GPU is a 1060 max-q, with overclocked cores at 220MHz and 320MHz on the VRAM. I've tried numerous adjustments. Disabling VSync caused screen tearing, while adaptive VSync didn't help much. I'm looking for someone else's experience or a solution to this problem. Have a good day.
Check if the issue occurs only with this particular game or across all games. Ensure the correct configuration is used—1060 instead of iGPU.
Are you using Vulkan or DirectX mode? I noticed Vulkan performs significantly better than DirectX, mainly because it’s much more powerful. Also, what configurations are you using, and what resolution are you setting? From what I’ve seen, it’s quite straightforward to run at full settings with Vulkan since it’s such a robust API.
I’ll attempt Vulkan once more, though I recall the same problem occurred before. I’ve adjusted all the configurations to the minimum and still fall below 50—it’s really frustrating. Being over-specified doesn’t help much; it still works smoothly.
Use MSI Afterburner to track your system's performance while playing. What are your current CPU and GPU temperatures?
Open GL differs significantly from DX, and based on my experience, DX generally performs better. Vulkan represents a completely new and superior API compared to anything else. While BF V shows considerable improvements for me, the system transition from DX11 to 12 achieves a mid-60s to mid-90s frame rate jump, which is impressive—similar to what I observed with DX11 versus Vulkan in Doom.
