This seems to be a different experience with older hardware and a specific Debian version. I'm okay with fewer updates as long as security and issues are resolved. Others have had similar experiences, so I'm not alone in doubt. I tested Debian in a virtual machine, but it caused my computer to freeze after installation. The setup process wasn't too bad, though the website's questions were a bit rough. I'm planning to try the live ISO again, hoping it matches the stable release. My PC is more of a home computer, so browsing and streaming are my main needs. Using it for storage and karaoke via microphone are additional requirements I need to meet. With clear documentation, I'm hoping it works out.

I understand this might not be the right subject, but I just had to share it—this is likely the first time another person has voiced this thought, even if expressed differently. It definitely feels... unpopular, but when I first tried Arch, especially after years of using Gentoo, I experienced the same feeling. We’ll have to stay quiet about it. It wasn’t long before I went back to my usual path. Gentoo stands out as the distro that resonates with me most deeply. But remember, patience and persistence are essential here. The journey can be complex, but it might offer real insights for those willing to explore. For most, the quick summary works best. I’ve shared similar opinions before, and I have a bit of reluctance toward "gaming" distros, though I’m trying to remain open-minded.

Another suggestion came to mind... but I also tried a different account and it had the same issue.

It's disappointing. Additional packages might be at play if the issue lies with other KDE components. I planned to revert Dolphin, but after testing it on a current Fedora setup, it proved difficult because of the complex relationships with other software. If you don't need it right now, consider waiting a few weeks to check for updates. For Debian, the experience will remain consistent regardless of choice. Generally, most user-focused applications stay similar, and Debian 13 will feel nearly identical to the latest KDE releases. In practice, differences beyond visual changes are usually subtle and tied to underlying philosophies that aren't always obvious. Of course, there are instances where a distro might offer unique customizations or its own IDE, which often become its key selling feature.

You're not alone in this discussion. On the second note, IDGAF says: "You aren't an atheist unless you've never studied a religious text word for word; otherwise, you're simply uninformed." I don't express a personal aversion, though I wouldn't claim to, but I remain aware that relying too much on the developers means your own understanding might be limited when you need to handle things independently. Windows power users often struggle with this idea.

I own a comparable device. I rely on an old DVD player remote to manage it (mostly because I don’t want to use a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard). Now there might be some mixed signals here, but this is for your consideration. Vivaldi was the ideal browser for me, and it has this "move cursor up/down/left/right" feature to switch between links. It performed excellently when browsing both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, with uBlock Origin blocking unwanted sections like the login and account menus on Amazon. You’ve just moved from Windows, so I suggest KDE—it’s the closest to a Windows setup and should not cause confusion for a typical Windows user, especially with your needs. The issue arises with the kiosk mode for a media device; KDE can be resource-intensive if not managed properly. If you were using Windows 10 or 11, there shouldn’t be any major concerns, though. Well, your TV server was running on an FX6350 until recently, and now it’s on a Ryzen 5600, which has worked perfectly without any problems.

So I tested Debian 13 in a live session and was able to access the shared folder on the W11 PC. Then I installed Debian for good. And the first thing i did was open Dolphin, and access the same folder and after entering my credentials, the same happens, Dolphin crashes. BTW, the installation was quite daunting. My SSD has partition with NTFS data (from when this was a W11 PC) and i had to go back and forth to delete the data and re-create the partition that had housed Fedora 42 installation. And then i had to "guess" where i wanted to install the Grub boot loader. So, there must be something else going on here when the live-iso works fine, but a totally fresh installation causes problems. Is it possible the live-iso has an older Dolphin? There were no updates in Discover. I also installed free file sync. That is a 2024 version, which is fine. but it couldn't show any network folder. That is a secondary problem since there may be an alternative application. So, what can i try now? (and no, not another OS installation ) Here the bug report: Application: Dolphin (dolphin), signal: Aborted warning: Can't open file anon_inode:i915.gem during file-backed mapping note processing warning: Can't open file /memfd:wayland-shm (deleted) during file-backed mapping note processing [New LWP 6966] [New LWP 6971] [New LWP 6969] [New LWP 6980] [New LWP 6989] [New LWP 6973] [New LWP 6970] [New LWP 6981] [New LWP 6991] [New LWP 6988] [New LWP 6978] [New LWP 6972] [New LWP 6979] [New LWP 6986] [Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled] Using host libthread_db library "/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libthread_db.so.1". Yes, it's highly probable. You might also attempt mounting the share without Dolphin; using standard Linux tools will let Dolphin open it normally. I came across a helpful guide at https://linuxize.com/post/how-to-mount-c...-on-linux/ and I recommend reviewing it thoroughly before proceeding. If you have any doubts, feel free to ask here.

I'll examine this further. It appears you need to understand domain names and related concepts. Would the updated version then refresh automatically when the source folder changes? Or would you still need to perform this action each time you want to sync data? In the meantime, I tried these steps: - Added a different program named "File" that didn't function properly and didn't show the shared folder (it's also a Gnome app) - Updated to version 25.08.0 from this site, but the older release (25.04.3) didn't help at all. I initially planned to install an older version, hoping to replicate the success of the live Debian release. However, it wasn't clear how to install a previous release. I also tried "Discover," but it struggled with unapproved add-ins. I'm not entirely sure if the Dolphin issue is the main problem, since Free File Sync doesn't detect networks or offers network locations. Is there another sync or backup tool that could work similarly? Ultimately, I only needed Dolphin to store my login details. In W11, I used Explorer once just to enter the folder and save credentials. After that, I relied on Free File Sync. My idea is, if FFS can locate the folder, I might be able to bypass the Dolphin challenge for now. On Debian generally: - It included Grub, allowing me to boot older kernels. Since I don't dual-boot, I turned that off in the text file. - When it starts and stops, it displays a long list of options for quick selection. This behavior isn't visible in Fedora. Is this typical and does it add noticeable delay during boot/shutdown? (It's generally fast, though I notice it). - I'm amazed a PC can stay idle at just 0.3% CPU. In W11, it usually runs between 10-30% (i7-7700K). It uses only 2.5GB of RAM out of 16GB after startup. My heavily optimized W11 used about 5GB (and at work without control, it starts with 9GB). - Besides this concern, the interface feels similar to Windows, just smoother. Same applies for Fedora. You won't realize how often I had to dig through Windows commands, registry tweaks, group policy editors, etc., and then repeat those steps after updates... - Except locating the ISO, and a somewhat more complex setup. This could be a beginner-friendly OS overall. - The only advantage in Fedora is that newly installed software gets highlighted in the menu, making it easier to spot.

There are guidelines on "using fstab" in the link as well, allowing automatic setup after reboots. It's concealed within FC, with a general approach mostly consistent. It does have a bit more complexity, but if you're not looking for very particular requirements, it's quite straightforward. One of the benefits is that you can set up almost any desktop environment and switch between them easily. *your requirements aren't unusual*
