I noticed lately that my PC's internet is slow, slowing down when I turn it on or restart it sometimes. At first I didn't know how to fix this and thought something was broken so I uninstalled the driver. Finally I found out what fixes it is to take the ethernet cable off the switch-hub that connects to the pc at one end and to the router at the other end (PC >> switch >> router) and reconnect it, then the speed goes back to 600Mbps which should be normal. Why does this happen? I'm pretty sure it didn't happen before? Two things I changed recently: Upgraded to Windows 11 Replaced my router

The most likely reason for this problem is a bad cable. I would try replacing it with a new one. It really just needs to be Cat5e or better like Cat6 which usually costs less. The main thing here is that the cable must be high quality. It needs pure copper without any CCA (copper cladding) and the wire size should be 22 to 24 gauge (make sure it's not flat or too thin). The other possibility is a strange issue with the bios settings. I know one of my machines will leave the ethernet port active even while the machine is sleeping or turned off. I only noticed this because I wondered what was connected to by network at only 100mbps speeds. It seems the machine changes the port speed back to gigabit as soon as it comes back online. I guess some silly "wake on lan" setting in the bios caused it, but since it never actually caused a problem for me, I haven't looked into checking that yet. Still, this is much more likely to be a cable issue. Cables can go just because a wire inside a plug gets slightly loose. This happens even more often if you use cheap cables, like those flat ones many people buy.

I got this stuff used. The router-to-switch wire is a brand-new Cat7 cable from Ugreen that looks flat and good quality. But the switch-to-PC one is round, looks like an old Cat5e, and I bought it on eBay back in my day.

I would plan to swap that flat cable out, even though it's not what made your problem happen because it sits between the router and the switch. Flat cables are all 31 wires or smaller, which means they can never be a proper ethernet cable and they also have a lower chance of being cat7 since those need shielding. The easiest fix is to get a new cat5e cable for your setup. It could also be something like changing the power setting on the green port on your PC or the switch.

Here is a quick update: I bought a better cable, but it got lost on the way home. I almost ordered a new one, but then decided to try again. It turned out that updating the driver fixed the problem. So, it looks like the issue was with the software, not the hardware. There were two identical drivers: one ended in "Microsoft" and the other in "Realtek." The Microsoft version had the problem, while the Realtek version seems fine so far because it keeps good speed after starting up and stays stable.

I need to give another update if anyone finds this post and sees the same problem. The issue kept happening even after I updated my drivers. Finally, I replaced the cheap cat5e ethernet cable with a better cat6 one. Now it feels like speed never drops under 100Mbps.

i still see this exact issue with my brand new computer, though it worked fine on my old one. I'm using the same ethernet cable that was working before, yet instead of getting full speed, i only get 300 Mbps now and it drops to 100 Mbps.

@Puppetie You made an old post here, so it's been over two years now (necro). Please start a fresh discussion thread and give us all the full computer hardware specs as well as what operating system you're using. Also share any specific details about your network problems. Closing this thread to keep things tidy for new posts.
