Does the Nvidia Control Panel experience crashes during Nvidia Color Settings adjustments?
Last night I played Helldivers and noticed my CPU was overheating and consuming more resources than usual. It turned out the newest Nvidia driver was causing excessive CPU usage, so I had to revert it. Someone recommended a custom installation instead of the express update for a fresh start.
I followed that advice and opened the Nvidia Control Panel, but it crashed when I changed my Nvidia Color Setting from the default to my custom one (I’m not sure if I had that setting before, but I’m pretty certain I did).
I tried a DDU and then downloaded the rollback driver again. The crash still happens only during the change from default to the Nvidia Color Settings. But if I disable HDR, it no longer crashes.
I’ve never had the Nvidia Control Panel crash before, so I’m unsure what’s happening. I even removed MSI Afterburner and River Tuner, did another DDU, but the problem remains. I ran the Nvidia Control Panel as administrator and it still crashes... changing other settings doesn’t trigger the issue. I’m not sure what to do next. Anyone have any suggestions?
Refresh your update with complete hardware details and operating system specifics. Power supply unit specifications: voltage, wattage, age, and condition (original build, new, refurbished, used). Storage: type, model, size, and current usage percentage. I will perform manual driver installations using files directly from the manufacturer's official sites. Please download, reinstall, and adjust settings as needed. No third-party software or installers will be used.
Windows 10 64 bit
-ASUS RTX 3060 12gb OC V2 (nearly new)
-ASUS Prime B550m-a (2½ - 3 years old)
-Corsair Vengeance 3200mh 16gb DDR4 (2½ - 3 years old)
-Ryzen 7 5800x3D (nearly new)
-Corsair RM650x (650w) (2 ½ - 3 years old)
-Samsung EVO 870 1tb (nearly new)
I performed several driver installations manually... It appears most functions work well with Nvidia Control Panel, except when attempting to switch to custom Nvidia Color Settings for desktop, which only functions properly with HDR turned off.
I tested various games and everything appears normal, though I suspect the issue lies with the Nvidia Control Panel.
Check the Reliability History/Monitor and Event Viewer for any error messages, alerts, or relevant logs concerning the Nvidia Control Panel, GPU drivers, or the monitor. Also review any log entries around the time of crashes.
Concerning the Corsair 650w PSU: has it experienced significant gaming activity recently? The power supply might be reaching its end of life and beginning to show signs of instability when higher power demands arise.
What? The reason for using higher wattage isn't clear. My games haven't crashed recently, and I only play for a few hours daily. That might not be correct. It seems to apply only with Nvidia Control Panel and NVC under certain conditions. If I disable HDR, change the color settings, and then enable HDR again, everything works properly.
I just checked my PSU and your words caught me off guard, making me think there might be an issue I wasn’t aware of. I’ve logged files in HWinfo65 without load, and the rails are still within normal ranges. I plan to run a load test to observe what happens. Would it be okay if you review the Excel file or highlight some important sections? So far, I’ve been using ChatGPT to identify the right categories to check for a possible faulty PSU (MB, GPU, CPU, etc.). I’ll put it under load now and see the results.
Do you possess a multimeter and understand its application? Or do you have someone familiar with it?

This isn't a complete assessment since the PSU isn<|pad|>, and only one rail being out of spec can trigger issues.

Additionally:
Power down, unplug, and open the case.
Remove dust and debris.
Confirm visually and physically that all connectors, cards, RAM, jumpers, and case connections are securely positioned. A loose connection could be the issue. Re-seat if needed.
Examine with a bright flashlight for damage signs: exposed conductors, melted insulation, corrosion, bent or pinched wires, blackened or browned spots, moisture, swollen parts, loose or absent screws, cracks.
These points are usually identified through elimination.

To rule it out, run "dism" and "sfc /scannow" to fix any damaged or corrupted files.

What kind of monitor(s) are you using? Certain models require specific drivers – verify that as well.
Keep reviewing Reliability History/Monitor and Event Viewer. Monitor for unfamiliar or unexpected processes starting at boot or triggered by Task Scheduler.
If Event Viewer logs are extensive, clear them to ensure new entries appear clearly.
In Reliability History/Monitor, search for crash-related trends in the timeline.
In summary, these steps mainly serve as further troubleshooting and diagnostics to pinpoint potential causes.
