It looks like that was the situation, but hopefully it will function now. I haven't seen any problems before.

I would purchase a new cable just to have an extra one available at home.
It might be that a wire is slightly loose at the plug end of the cable, causing it not to fit properly.
A small jolt or movement could cause it to drop back to 100mbps.
This can happen unpredictably and may work in some devices while failing in others.
Ideally, the Ethernet cable would completely fail, but more likely it would behave as you described.
