Hello,
I just bought a Gigabyte Aorus Master 5080 and intend to connect it with my Montech Century II PSU. The PSU comes with a 450W cable rated for 12VHPWR, so I’m checking if this will work well with the new GPU. I understand the TDP is about 360W, but I’m concerned it might rise like with the 3080, which could affect the need for a better cable. Since I won’t be overclocking and plan to run the GPU at stock settings, I’m hoping this setup will be fine.
I’d also like a cable extension in the future because Montech doesn’t sell replacement cables—neither braided nor otherwise—and I want my PC to look neat. Is this safe? And do you have any recommendations for quality cables?
Here are my system details:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- RAM: 32GB Acer Predator CL30 6000MTs
- Motherboard: MSI B650-P ATX
- PSU: Montech Century II
- GPU: Gigabyte RTX 4060 (now discontinued, to be replaced by the 5080)
Sure, it seems reasonable to install a cable extension as long as all connections are properly secured. I’m also aware of some reliable suppliers beyond cablemod.
Well, power cable extensions increase the ripple. And high ripple = unstable system.
I'm running CableMod myself (specs/pics in my sig), since CableMod is the best out there. After all, when i care a lot about my system, why settle with anything less than the very best?

(Btw, i'm running Seasonic units and before buying CableMod cables, i popped an e-mail directly to Seasonic about CableMod cables. Seasonic representative replied that CableMod cables are high quality and on-par to the default cables Seasonic themselves are including with their PSUs. And using them, will not void the 12 year warranty i have on my PSUs.)
Eyecandy will cost a lot. That is given. No way to get around of that. Else-ways, you will be sacrificing build quality.
For example;
My Aurora build. The Seasonic PSU i run in it, is PRIME 650 80+ Titanium unit [SSR-650TD]. It was the best 650W PSU money could buy in 2016 and i forked out €206.80 for it.
CableMod full cable kit for my Seasonic unit (replacement power cables, not extenders), costed me €175, back in 2018. Almost the same as PSU itself. But did i stop there? No.
At later time, i also bought:
* CableMod SE-series cable combs (transparent) €10.04
* CableMod anodized aluminum thumbscrews 10 pack (red) €8.56
* CableMod 2-pin chassis I/O cables (4x, red) €20.72
* CableMod internal USB 2.0 cables (2x, red) €10.36
* CableMod internal HD audio cable (red) €6.04
* CableMod 4-pin fan cable (red) €5.18
That's total of €235.90 that i've spent on CableMod. Costing more than my top-end PSU did.
And that, is just for 1 build of mine. I bought the very same set (in blue color) and almost the same PSU (Seasonic SSR-650TR) for my 2nd build, Astral as well.
And did i stop there? No, i did not.
I also bought the very same set (in green color), albeit a bit cheaper PSU, for my 3rd build (old AMD Athlon) as well, which is now retired (Specs/pics

Now, i can see that you went cheap-ish on PSU, since Montech Century II 850W is the cheapest Tier A (actually Tier A-) PSU out there. There is nothing wrong with going a bit cheaper PSU, which still is good quality. But you should realize that eyecandy (power cable extensions, anodized aluminum thumbscrews etc) are not needed what-so-ever. For most people, that is complete waste of money.
Would you fork out £/$/€ 200+ for CabeMod only? Like yours truly did,
and that for 3 times?

I think not, since $43 + shipping for you is already out of the world price.
All i'm saying is, that power cable extension will increase the ripple from the PSU and you may end up with unstable system. Better to get direct cable from PSU to the GPU (like my builds are). And i get that there are no pre-made cable kits from CableMod to Montech PSUs (like there are for Seasonic/Corsair PSUs). But you can use CableMod Custom Configurator to make a direct cable for your PSU.

Given that you bought yourself $1450 GPU, $43 + shipping is peanuts compared to that.
I was expecting to end up with cablemod if there were no other options. I understand the cost of high-quality cables that go straight into the PSU, and making my PC look better would require investing in them. At the time, I went for a cheaper PSU because I was unemployed and needed something new (my old one was terrible). I could have spent more on a Corsair if I had the budget. The only thing I miss is being able to buy cables directly from cablemod or getting custom ones. Thanks for your help—I really value your knowledge.
