Hey everyone, my sister works with video rendering and has a decent setup. She’s using an i7 quad-core CPU on her laptop, while I have a dual-core Athlon X64 5000+ desktop at home. I’m wondering if adding more machines to a render farm makes sense—like, if you added two of them? Does it really matter what hardware you use? I’ve heard render farms can run on CPUs, but I’m not sure if a mid-range graphics card like the GTX 510 or 8500 is enough. It seems like most of the work is done on the CPU, but I want to make sure I’m not missing anything.

Power demands truly clarify the value of a large-scale render farm, especially when you need more than one machine or want to create a shared powerful setup.

The main goal is to minimize rendering time here.

We share files and render sections together instead of building everything from scratch.

Yeah, just working with multiple laptops at the office. What about you at home? She’s really committed.

With the devices ready, configuring them in Adobe Suite is straightforward.

It would likely have a noticeable impact on performance, especially with slow CPUs. The difference might be around 0.04%, but it could still be significant depending on the workload.

Based on the CPU power, I let my friend run his Xeon with an I7 and my brothers used an FX-6300. The FX runs a bit slower than the mobile I7, but the Xeon handles frames much better. In total, it’s roughly three times faster for us.

Wow okay, so there indeed IS a difference :-D So adding a 8350 to a mobile i7 should "double" the rendering performance.

I haven't tested them directly, but I've seen the i7 mobile outperform my old i5-3570k by about twice as much. The i5 and 8350 are pretty close in rendering speed. So yes, it's likely within a 10% difference either way.
