I'm attempting to push my FX-8350 beyond its limits during stress tests and consistently see it underclock to 1.4 ghz. Despite the good temperatures, this behavior is puzzling. Is this a throttling issue that can be resolved? I'm currently around 4.3 ghz, but it was stable at 4.2 ghz before. What's the point if your VRM gets damaged?
Voltage Regulation Module... at least the board dies, in the worst case the CPU goes with it.
The 125w FX chips require a VERY robust VRM setup. The ASUS Sabertooth is the most affordable option I've found that can handle it. I used a Gigabyte 970 with 6+2 phases and it still failed under my [email protected].

Because you rely on a water cooler, the VRM could be overheating and reducing CPU performance to safeguard itself. Installing a fan should help cool it down and fix the problem.

if it isn't a 95w fx8350e then don't modify that board... you'll have to focus on the VRM's

i'm seeing a fan blowing into the VRM now and it's stable at 4.5 ghz, though it was causing some artifacts so i went back to the default.
