Does overclocking harm a CPU?
I’m considering selling my old i7 6700K and want to understand how overclocking might impact its longevity. I’ve noticed others listing CPUs with overclocking history, and they’re often highlighting it. Is this practice generally harmful to the device’s lifespan?
It’s hard to confirm if a CPU has been overclocked because there’s no definitive method. Claims about extreme overclocks seem possible, especially with unusual conditions like using LN2, and there’s no clear evidence to rule them out.
Long term overclocking can lower the maximum frequency it supports. On my previous 6700k, I had to cut clock speeds after two years because it became unstable at around 4.9Ghz, and I didn’t want to raise the voltage. With my newer 8700k, I had to boost the voltage a bit to maintain 5.1Ghz, which happened after about one and a half years of regular use—still nothing alarming, just typical wear and tear. It’s hard to say for sure if a CPU has been overclocked, but under normal conditions it would take a long time to impact the standard clock speeds, especially for the 6700k unless there was a problem with the chip itself. The third generation Ryzen behaves differently.
My 8700k has consistently run at 5ghz with a delid, and maintained 1.375v for about two years without any problems.
