Does Overclocking Boost FPS More Than Reduce It?
Does Overclocking Boost FPS More Than Reduce It?
I have an i5 4690k processor. After using the overclocking feature in the BIOS (Turbo Boost), game performance jumps significantly—reaching up to 354 FPS in games like LoL. Once it restarts, everything loads normally, but after 10 to 15 minutes, the FPS drops back to the original level. For instance, in League of Legends:
Without Overclock: 134 FPS
With Overclock: 345 FPS
After 10-15 minutes: 134 FPS
It feels like the overclock only provides a short-term boost, like Super Saiyan Gogeta 4. I haven’t changed the thermal paste in the past nine months, which might be the issue.
My CPU temperatures are:
- Core 0: Min 61°C, Max 85°C
- Core 1: Min 60°C, Max 88°C
- Core 2: Min 60°C, Max 88°C
- Core 3: Min 58°C, Max 81°C
I also have a GTX 970 GPU.
Update from 6/1/2016:
I’ve observed that the high FPS only stabilizes after a restart, without overclocking. Here’s a summary of my tests:
- League of Legends Run Test
- Without OC After Reboot: 345 FPS
- With OC After Reboot: 343 FPS
- Without OC 20 Minutes After Reboot: 143 FPS
- With OC 20 minutes After Reboot: 141 FPS
Game performance returns to normal after a reboot, but remains lower than before. The boost disappears after about 20 minutes, dropping around 60% from the original rate. The overclock doesn’t affect FPS—it’s not working.
This covers most of what I know. Please let me know if you missed anything or need further help!
As you mentioned before, this isn't a custom issue. You're experiencing the same problems no matter who you are, and your FPS remains unchanged. (I don’t really expect an improvement to 40 fps just by changing your CPU’s settings.)
The temperatures look normal since you have a stock cooler, so it doesn’t seem like that’s the main cause...
It appears everything is related to your GPU... Have you tried running other games or programs?
If I understood correctly, everything seems okay for about 20 minutes after rebooting, then FPS drops. And if you keep playing—whether LoL or something else—do you still face issues until you restart the PC?
It would be helpful to track your voltages and temperatures while gaming. That way you can identify exactly where the problem lies...
What cooler do you have? That 88ºC is quite high. It looks like your i5 4690K is getting too hot and the system is automatically limiting its performance to keep it cool. I assume you're using auto OC tools, but if you really want to boost the CPU, consider a gentler OC setting—it might be safer for your cooler.

If you're planning to overclock, try a moderate setting, as it looks like your cooler isn't safe for that level. I've discovered the temperature issue has changed; I'm currently using the i5 4690K fan cooler with one fan on the left and two above it, on a 1150 motherboard. Please check the highlighted part for the updated results, thank you for the help!

It would be helpful to keep an eye on your voltages and temperatures while gaming. This could help identify if the FPS drop is linked to high GPU temps, insufficient power from your PSU, or unstable voltage.

It seems the situation is likely related to your GPU. Have you tried running other games or programs?

I'm still unsure what exactly is causing it, but I have several potential solutions in mind. I plan to purchase a new PSU to test, and if that doesn't work, I'll return soon. Thanks.
I discovered the solution! It was my CPU consumption. Another application (in Task Manager) set my CPU usage to 98% in the USAGE field, and removing it improved my FPS immediately after restarting!
