Does my computer crash often?
My computer functioned properly until the past five months. Initially, the red CPU LED would illuminate while I used Windows. After cleaning the PC, the problem disappeared for some time. Recently, Windows began crashing, followed by a blue screen and then the red CPU LED reactivating. Even in Safe Mode, it crashes again. When trying to shut down, the computer doesn't respond at all.
Corrupted files can occur during shutdowns. If the preparation isn’t completed or stopped properly, Windows won’t be immediately ready for a restart, and files might become damaged. When attempting to boot, the corrupted file can stop the process, though a "verbose" option may exist that shows detailed steps of what’s happening during startup.
For more information, you can refer to this article: https://www.baeldung.com/cs/computer-boot-process. Other online guides also explain similar situations.
It’s possible to use Safe Boot or a recovery drive to handle these issues. If a button isn’t functioning, it could be faulty or due to a connection problem. I believe any error messages, warnings, or notifications might offer some hints. For instance, your crash dump suggests an issue with FLTMGR.SYS.
The fItmgr.sys file, also called the Microsoft File system Filter Manager, is important for ensuring hard drive data is readable and correct. If this file isn’t working, you may see a Blue Screen of Death that points to fItmr.sys as the cause.

Good evening
I’m still facing this problem, but now there’s no BSOD. Instead, the red CPU LED stays lit after 5 to 8 hours. I have to shut down the PC using the PSU button because the shutdown and restart buttons aren’t working. It’s not that the hardware is broken—it functions properly for those 5 to 8 hours. I’m unsure how long this will last since I go to sleep.
All the indicators—MB, RAM, GPU, case—are working correctly.
During these days, I’ve done several things:
- Installed a new OS via Microsoft and updated the chipset and drivers to the latest versions
- Updated the BIOS to the newest and oldest versions
- Swapped my RAM module to another 8GB one I had
- Unplugged and re-plugged all cables, even after swapping the CPU cable I never used
- Changed the DP cable to DHMI
- Experienced strange noises from the PSU, similar to a video
- Temperatures are normal; I ran a CPU stress test for 5 to 10 minutes, and everything worked fine during those hours. I even played demanding games like Destiny 2. The Vcore voltage seemed low because I disabled turbo boost via BIOS, so the stock CPU runs at 3.6GHz.
Update: I reset the CPU and cooler, but now it crashes in the BIOS when booting. It takes about 3 to 2 minutes before it shuts down. The CPU LED turns red during this crash. I also tried removing all VGA, SSD, and HDD connections, touched the CPU to check for heat, and confirmed it’s getting warm.
I tried to fix it, but I just had to swap out the thermal paste because it’s been there for a while. I’m wondering why the temperatures are still between 40-50 and if that points to a thermal problem? Could part of the CPU be getting hot while the core isn’t?
Hi I firstly respect Ralston18's advice and expertise. Please follow their advice first as my info is a suggestion. As you have already reseated and repasted the CPU. I was going to suggest removing the CPU and cooler and firmly reseat the CPU and repaste and install the CPU cooler. Then start your PC and have HW monitor software running always on top while you test run games and applications to check the temperatures to insure they are in acceptable parameters for your system. This should eliminate the crashing issues. Hope it runs well for you. Cheers.
yea i still don’t experience any crashes after repaste, the main problem now is the pc would sometimes start but then stop after a few days. i tried something i didn’t know what it was, i held down the shutdown button for 5-10 seconds when starting the pc and it restarted normally afterward. this seems to be related to a cold boot. i have the latest bios 7B85v1H4 (beta version), but i’m not sure what could cause the power button and restart to fail when the cpu led lights up, even though i think they’re fine.
i found a discussion about cold boot issues and applied a setting in the bios that claims it will fix the problem completely. the steps were:
update to 7B85v1B
go to BIOS -> overclocking -> CPU features and set:
- "Power Supply Idle Control" to 'Typical Current Idle'
- "Collaborative Power Performance Control" to 'enabled'
quiet ' to 'disabled'
C-state' to 'disabled'
