It has been repeatedly demonstrated that ultra/ultraest adjustments greatly impact performance, yet they often come with little to no benefit when compared to high settings. What I understand is still unclear.

And I think this applies to many games as well. It's hard to spot the difference between very high or ultra unless you take a screenshot and compare them directly. With a moving image and careful observation of what's happening in the game, those small details usually go unnoticed, but the performance impact is clear.
