Hey, I have an i9-9900K and an RTX2080Ti. In every game, I set everything to the highest level. Just used Alt+R to see how fast things run for some of them. Most games are stuck around 60 or 70 frames per second. Sometimes they hit 100Hz but never go higher. So, is it a waste to spend more on a 4K monitor that shows 144Hz instead of just 60? When I do work in Windows 10, I don't notice much of a difference in how smooth things feel compared to the other option.

it doesn't come to waste at all. if you sometimes see better than 60 frames per second, then having the option to display up to 144 hz is actually great for you. i don't care about people pretending they can tell the difference between 100 fps and 500 fps, but i could definitely notice a difference when moving from 60 to 100 fps. if you are happy with what you have right now, then why bother? but if you really feel like you need one little boost, then jump in. just don't get tricked by the marketing hype though. the frame rate number is just a count, and if you're okay with 60, that's all you need. i changed from 60 hz to 144hz screen and thought the main change was just the better picture quality, not really how many times it could show me that image. 144 refreshes per second on a bad image is not worth it at all. lol

I bought three BenQ EX3210U screens but they all have problems. It might make sense to give them back and get cheaper models. More expensive monitors aren't always free from flaws. If I just want to play games in 4K, why buy a big screen when I could get an even bigger TV?

You have rules about getting things back if something goes wrong, which makes sense. I'm not trying to sell you expensive stuff just because it looks good. But before you buy, check a few reviews so you know what to expect. My screen is an AOC 24G1 at $149 on sale. For a cheap monitor, it works way better than the one I was using before.

Yeah, I've looked at a bunch of reviews before. But it's hard to find people who tell me they are not happy about it.

yah that does seem to be true. plus i know nothing about monitors so most of the reported numbers were jibberish to me. i feel your pain for sure. i read probably a dozen on the one i got and most said "for the money, this is a great buy, better out there for sure, but great for the price." that was good enough for me and i am happy, but i don't over think it. i just use my system and don't bother digging too deep unless something goes wrong.

If they were prefect, I might keep them but they have issues that the manufacturer does not know for sure what is wrong and I cannot keep spending time to keep doing tests for them. In addition to other issues, there are also backlight bleed. I am also a bit pis*ed off by them saying that they don't test their monitors in the dark and I should not use them in a dark environment even they have Cinema mode. I can see the bleed even brightness is at the minimum.

They often blame things on you instead of them when there are problems with their stuff. I watch movies on my TV plugged into the PC, so I never had those kinds of black screen issues happen to me before.

If you have enough graphics card power for it and the picture quality is nice, then buying it isn't a bad thing at all.

So if you already own a good 4K monitor at 60 frames per second, switching to something with a higher refresh rate feels like wasting money. But if you're going to buy a 4K screen no matter what, getting that extra frame rate makes more sense.
