I've had trouble with Google Drive lately, using up too much CPU power (usually between 25% and 35%). My laptop fan keeps spinning hard when the program is open. Also, a strange problem happens where several small icons in the tray keep showing up. They disappear if you mouse over them, but something seems wrong. What causes this issue and how can I fix it?
How do you open Google Drive? You can use a quick key press or click your mouse. Does Task Manager show up to start it? Maybe check there for strange apps showing up while starting. I found 7 apps from Google Drive showing up in Task Manager. One of them uses a lot of CPU power. Even after turning off antivirus software, it still shows high usage. Looking online, nothing has synced for weeks or even days. Basically, Google Drive isn't working on my computer at all.
Do you see anything moving around in Task Manager, Resource Monitor, or even Process Explorer that looks like it belongs to the multiplying icons? Also, maybe you have some viruses or something else stealing your computer. Run Windows Security and other antivirus programs to try to find and stop any bad stuff on your machine. Just in case. Check when Windows updates happened: see if there were any problems with those updates.
There are 7 times GD shows up, but I don't know what's normal or not. One of them uses about 30% CPU so that seems too much. I think a bad file might be causing this, even though I've removed and reinstalled it twice already. Now there is another problem - I can't get rid of it at all. It disappears from the installed programs list in settings. The .exe file works and opens the program, but it stays hidden somewhere else. Something is definitely wrong.

Here is what happened: I finally got Google Drive completely out of my computer using a tool called Revo Uninstaller. A normal uninstall didn't work because leftover files kept showing up, and those files were probably broken. So I restarted everything from scratch and downloaded all the data again (that took about 24 hours). Now it seems to be working fine. I can use it in offline mode without any problems.
However, I still have a problem with the program running too much on my computer's CPU. To stop this, I shut down the app when it finishes syncing and turn it back on only for short periods during the week. There was another issue: setting up an offline folder in a spot that wasn't the usual place didn't work. After letting it sync for over 36 hours, nothing showed up inside. But after restarting and picking the default location instead, things seem to be working now.
If you are having this same problem, try using another program like Revo Uninstaller to remove all Google Drive files completely. Then restart your computer and put My Drive back in the standard spot (if you can). Let it sync up for a few days or even more than 12 hours before checking again. I will tell you if there are any other issues later on.
