Hey there! I'm planning to set up a server for my friends and want to keep it simple with no more than five players. The main challenge is figuring out what software and hardware will work best. We've tried a modded setup before using ATM3 and ATM5, but those often suffered from high lag, especially the latter which became unplayable.

Our current rig runs an i7 4720HQ with a BGA/LGA adapter, supporting up to 3.60GHz, 16GB DDR3-1866 RAM, and a 250GB SATA SSD. It's mostly dedicated to Minecraft servers. We have Gigabit fiber internet and expect a long break soon, so we're thinking about restarting the server.

I'm not sure if it's the hardware specs or something else causing issues. I was considering either tweaking the existing setup or upgrading locally—maybe swapping to an i5 4690K for better performance, or even moving to a more powerful i7 like the 7350K. Overclocking the laptop chip isn't ideal since it's not designed for that.

Upgrading with a desktop part seems tempting, but the base clock speed is only 2.6GHz, which is low for a gaming rig. I could also look into Amazon spot instances or rent a VPS from providers like OVH or Hotline Servers. One friend has access to a Xeon Gold Cascade Lake with 8vCores/8GB DDR4 and 100GB NVMe storage for a reasonable price.

The players will mostly be from the West Coast, so location might matter. Any suggestions on optimizing the current server or choosing a new setup would be great! Thanks in advance for your help!

I’m familiar with modded servers. It depends on the modpacks and mods you use, but you’ll need at least 6GB of RAM. With your 16GB that’s fine. You’ll also need more than one core, which is covered by your quad-core CPU. Honestly, this setup should work well with what you have.

The only reason I'm considering a change is because performance lags. Even with just one user, a fresh server, and local connection, the TPS remains poor. I’m unsure what’s happening, but I remember using Amazon spot instances (usually ARM xl) without issues before. Someone mentioned that MC uses many single-threaded instances and suggested getting something like a 7350K at a lower cost since those are less popular for gaming anymore.

Server operation typically runs smoothly on Xeons, though their single-core performance isn't exceptional. Your laptop's single-thread speed falls short compared to most Xeons. What OS are you running? Version 1.14 performed poorly on servers—it was quite outdated and expensive, as a Ryzen 3 3100 can be found for around $90 today, offering much better performance.

It's a desktop setup, using a BGA to LGA adapter from Taobao. The VPS is running a consumer Ryzen 9 3900X or 5900X. 2. It was an ATM5 with 1.15.2, roughly 200 modifications. 3. R3 3100 is currently out of stock, can't purchase them for the sake of it.

Have you thought about adopting an older server setup? It seems MC runs mainly on one thread, so an E5-2690v1 with a top boost clock of 3.8GHz would likely work well—especially if you have extra cores and plenty of RAM for future requirements.

I’d love to, but I need it finished soon. The current domestic market situation and shipping issues make it hard to get anything in time. I already have a 4690K with a Z97 board, so I could adapt it for Minecraft. I’d prefer a VPS, though—I should note the poor peering between my ISP and my friend’s ISP.

I could possibly assist you... Look into your Discord. Updated: The VPS option you referenced earlier seems optimal. Please let me know if there are any updates...
