I recently overclocked my ram and ran memtest to confirm stability. Four passes and no errors. I’ve considered overclocking my i9 but haven’t yet due to some confusion about the process (I’ll figure it out later).
My question is whether my ram will function adequately without overclocking the i9-9900k… The unusual part is that Intel claims their CPU supports up to 2666 MHz, yet I’ve heard others say your ram can still reach higher speeds with this CPU. Can anyone clarify? Should I overclock my CPU to fully utilize my RAM OC? Should I revert the RAM OC back to default until I upgrade the CPU?
What speed are you seeing in CPU-Z or HWInfo? If XMP is turned on, it should function at 3200Mhz. The memory overclock (XMP) is distinct from the CPU overclock. Although the CPU might be rated for 2666Mhz RAM, the motherboard can enable the RAM to exceed those speeds. Generally, most decent Z-series boards support RAM overclocking.
I have HWINFO64 and although I'm used to GPU core temp/vram temp readings, I'm not very familiar with anything else so I'll just leave a link for pictures below. If you could let me know if anything seems wrong, I'd really appreciate it! I'm trying to find tutorial videos on how to interpret HWINFO64 data but haven't been successful so far. I might try each component separately to see if it helps. Other than that, I'm not very good at understanding all the information and numbers... I'll be honest.
For stability testing, use Aida64 for 20 minutes and check with check boxes for CPU, FPU, and Cache. This helps determine if the system remains stable under load and verifies rail voltages. The graphs you link display the system in idle mode, but the CPU must be at full utilization.
Regarding RAM, your CPU (as specified) supports up to 2666MHz, depending on the IMC (Integrated Memory Controller). If it reaches the rated frequency of 3200Mhz and stays stable, performance is solid.
You don’t need to overclock your CPU for good RAM performance. If the XMP profile functions well, keep it as is. When upgrading your CPU, simply reset CMOS and update BIOS and chipset.
