Occasionally the fuse in my home blows, cutting power for about ten minutes. I’m considering purchasing a solid UPS to maintain operation during outages. This is my first attempt at buying one, so I’m unsure about the best brand or the right wattage. My PC uses an EVGA Supernova 750W G3 PSU, paired with a 2080 Ti GPU and an Intel 9900KF CPU that’s overclocked. I also have a MSI Optix MPG341CQR monitor, a 55-inch LED HDTV, a SVS PC-2000 subwoofer, and a Denon AVR-X3300W receiver.
My main concern is connecting just the PC to the UPS because during gaming sessions with many open tabs and work documents, I want to avoid interruptions. The other devices will restart quickly and won’t affect my workflow. I don’t mind them since they turn off after a short time and don’t store data. In the future, I might upgrade to a higher-wattage PSU and GPU, such as an Nvidia 5090.

UPS devices are designed to allow users some time to shut down the system smoothly. The longer duration and higher power demand will raise the price of the UPS. These demands depend on the connected equipment. Many specifications assume perfect conditions, so you won’t always experience identical times or power levels in real settings. I suggest reviewing the User Guide or Manual for any UPS you plan to use. Read carefully the details, warnings, disclaimers, warranty, and EULA. Visit the manufacturer’s site for the latest information, FAQs, and technical support pages. Consider both what is mentioned and what is omitted.
Saving work in progress should be a priority. Continuing to play is less important. The UPS needs to work with the computer and at least one monitor. You must still perform regular backups and confirm the target device remains protected. Avoid relying solely on backups if power loss could cause bigger issues.
Anyone have checked the fuses or breakers? Breakers can wear out and fail over time, possibly due to overloads or electrical faults. An intermittent short might lead to more serious problems than just a power cut for your computer and accessories. If the tripping issue persists, contact a qualified electrician immediately.
There are two aspects of a UPS to consider.
1. The amount of power it needs to manage.
Your current consumption can be checked using a wall-mounted kill-a-watt meter, which costs around $20.
2. The duration the UPS should provide power during an outage.
I previously used an APC 1500VA unit for a project like mine. It lasted about 15 minutes. APC includes software (Parachute) that helps monitor events, which I found helpful. If you're in the US, it's wise to contact them directly for expert advice. Remember, batteries typically last around 4 to 5 years.
I strongly suggest using APC. They provide a calculator at the location where you input your load parameters and desired run time, which then gives you some model numbers to evaluate. Keep in mind that very high power usage combined with extended backup periods can become quite costly.
The APC I currently use is an older version intended for A/V equipment, but it has met my requirements effectively. It features a battery pack with a spacer, which is no longer available, but I managed to order replacements and reassemble them using the original spacer.
The model I own or any similar one will perform regular checks to assess battery condition and alert you if necessary. To ensure optimal battery health, begin with quality units and replace them every three years according to a schedule. Even if tests indicate they are still functional, it's wise to replace them every five years just to be safe. SLA batteries lose their capacity over time, reducing both Ah rating and runtime; without power, performance would diminish significantly.
I just need the system to stay active until I can turn it off completely. In most cases, the power cuts out and restarts within 5-10 minutes. I only want the UPS to maintain operation for 5-10 minutes while the electricity returns. I don’t want my PC to shut down automatically, just to keep running. After the power comes back after that period, will the UPS switch back to drawing power from the wall or continue using its battery? The main concern is ensuring the PC stays on, especially since the kill-a-watt meter indicates it’s using about 450 watts under load. I’m aiming for double that amount to be safe and future-proof, so the system can last 5-10 minutes during a power reset. It’s not just about gaming sessions; I’m worried about preserving data and work files.
I’ve noticed the fuse keeps tripping over many years now. Even after several electrician visits, the house is quite old (over 30 years) with poor construction, outdated wiring, and faulty components. The wattage meter shows around 450 watts from the wall during operation. The issue only affects the room with the PC, so the power supply to that area drops and then restores after a few minutes while the system resets itself. No other rooms in the building are impacted by this fault. However, it’s likely due to faulty wiring or components that only affect that single room.
Thanks! I checked the APC lineup and found a model on Amazon called "CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD PFC Sinewave UPS System, 1500VA/1000W, 12 Outlets, AVR, Mini Tower, Black." It was more affordable and similar in features. There’s also an APC Smart version available.
I can only discuss my experience with APC.
Normal operations will restart once power returns.
The system includes a test mode to temporarily cut power for backup checks before resuming.
There’s a feature to safely shut down the PC when battery levels approach depletion.
Cyber power is widely used, but I believe its quality differs from APC's.
