Do you need advice on how much memory to put in your laptop?
I put a Lexar 3200mhz 8gb stick of RAM into my Lenovo Legion 5 laptop, which also had an old Kingston 8gb stick of RAM that came with it. I took the original Kingston Ramaxel out because I noticed it got hot and had chips on both sides, while the new Lexar one felt cooler and only had chips on one side. Both sticks are 3200mhz 8gb CL22, but I saw different timing numbers in CPU Z for the Lexar and Kingston. It was strange because the timings looked exactly the same between the old Ramaxel and the new Kingston. What do you think? Should I stick with the Lexar instead of buying a fresh Kingston one? Or is it okay to mix them up together?
I bought two different pieces of memory: one from Lexar and another from Kingston. Both are 3200MHz but have different amounts (8GB each). That's a weird mix-up because they're not compatible with the same chips, so they won't work together right now. Also, even if they were the same brand, sticking them on your RAM sticks would be wrong. If you plan to upgrade your computer later, you should buy matching sticks from the same brand or a full kit instead of mixing random ones. To fix this issue with heat, it's probably because your processor uses that memory for its internal chips (APUs), so having mismatched sticks can cause problems there.
I've heard that using two different RAM sticks with the same size, speed, and timing isn't a big deal if you run them together. It's bad though when there are differences in timing because it can slow down the whole thing. So you might try mixing Ramaxel and Kingstone sticks. I'm not sure if they'll work in dual-channel mode, but you could test that out. CPU-Z should tell you exactly what it is about. But Lutfij was right; buying a kit with two identical RAM modules is the best choice.
Thanks a lot. It feels like my PC runs faster after taking out the Ramaxel stick. I'm looking for another Kingstone, and it's going to be the same model. The one I got from a friend he only used for a few days before swapping his RAM kit. He gave me that one way back in 2021. I bought this Kingstone just two days ago.
