Do you need a new motherboard and power supply together?
I have an i7 4790, no graphics card, a dell optiplex 9020 mt, a 290 watt power supply, and a 0N4YC8 motherboard. My brother suggested getting an rx 580 but reminded me I’d need a new power supply, which he was right about. I’m unsure what to buy or which motherboard fits it best. I also have DDR3 RAM sticks installed, so I’m not sure if I should replace them or keep them. The question is whether the rx 580 will work with my Optiplex 9020 mt.
You're looking to avoid spending a lot on a new board. Check the PSU in the case and see if it has a 6/8 pin connector. (Photos would be useful.) A standard ATX PSU can usually fit most boards, making it a more sensible choice than a decades-old motherboard.
Don't worry about the mess, I was thinking of cleaning it up soon.
It seems a 290W might not be sufficient for adding a GPU, and there’s likely no 6 or 8 pin connector on your setup. You could consider a power supply around 500-600W and use the adapter I mentioned to upgrade it, which would allow running a GPU. Your current board should handle the GPU fine.
